Pre & Post-Surgery Nutrition Optimization
Musculoskeletal injuries and orthopedic surgeries are stressful to the body and trigger complex inflammatory and immune events. As patients transition from injury to post-surgical recovery, they become hypermetabolic- with significantly greater nutrition requirements in order to prevent loss of lean muscle. Nutrition counseling helps patients understand where their own diet may be falling short of meeting these increased metabolic demands associated with maintenance of muscle mass, bone repair, inflammation, and tissue regeneration.
Surprisingly, one quarter to half of all people undergoing joint surgery have subclinical malnutrition- where the physical manifestations are not present until severe. Malnutrition is associated with poorer outcomes after surgery; for example- both micronutrient and protein-deficiency increase the risk of infection and delay wound healing. More than half of patients are vitamin D deficient- which is associated with postoperative pain. Obesity is also associated with increased operation time, rate of developing any complication, extended length of stay, and predicts return to the operating room.
Working with our Sports Dietitian will help you optimize your diet and readiness for surgery, avoid complications and shorten recovery time, so you can get back to doing the activities you love more quickly.
