Dr. Elly LaRoque
Board-certified orthopaedic surgeon in Northern CaliforniaMeet Dr. Elly LaRoque, a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist with extensive expertise in arthroscopy - a minimally invasive surgical technique used to diagnose and treat joint conditions as well as in the rehabilitation of knee and shoulder injuries. She is highly experienced in managing sports injuries across a broad spectrum of athletes, from young recreational participants to elite-level competitors, providing personalized care tailored to each individual’s needs.
Dr. LaRoque's research seeks to enhance understanding and improve treatment outcomes for orthopaedic knee conditions. Her recent research projects and publications involve improving surgical techniques for meniscus transplant, meniscus root repair, and decompressing popliteal cysts. She is also involved in a study evaluating treatment guidelines for patients with ACL tears. Her previous research involved studying gender differences in the patellofemoral joint, which is the area where the kneecap meets the thigh bone. To advance knowledge in this area, Dr. LaRoque conducted comprehensive studies involving biomechanical testing on cadaver knees and contact pressure measurements, and utilized advanced imaging techniques, such as MRI, to analyze the structural and functional dynamics of the patellofemoral joint. This work helped optimize surgical techniques and rehabilitation protocols, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
Dr. LaRoque’s academic journey began at the University of California, Irvine, where she earned her medical degree.
She then completed a rigorous residency in orthopaedic surgery at Stanford Hospital, where she gained extensive training in a variety of orthopaedic procedures. Following her residency, she pursued a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at Stanford University Medical School and Sports Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Medicine Associates. This advanced training provided her with specialized skills in minimally invasive knee and shoulder surgical techniques and comprehensive knowledge in sports-related injuries.
Before joining UCSF, Dr. LaRoque practiced at Golden Gate Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery and Post Street Orthopaedic Surgery, where she further honed her skills in managing complex orthopaedic conditions and sports injuries. Her commitment to sports medicine extends beyond her clinical practice, as she currently serves as team physician for Junipero 'Serra' High School in San Mateo, providing sideline football coverage and expert orthopaedic care to athletes and contributing to their overall health and performance. She has also served as team physician for Dominican University, Academy of Art University and Stuart Hall High School in San Francisco. Since 2020, she has provided medical coverage for multiple Bay Area PGA tournaments. She also serves as Orthopaedic Site Director at the UCSF Redwood Shores Specialty Care Clinic. Dr. LaRoque’s dedication to both clinical excellence and research underscores her commitment to advancing the field of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine.
