Dr. Rhonda Watkins
Primary Care Sports Medicine PhysicianMeet Dr. Rhonda Watkins, a primary care sports medicine physician dedicated to caring for children, adolescents, and young adults with a wide range of musculoskeletal and sports-related conditions. Drawing on her unique perspective as a former Olympic track-and-field athlete, she brings both medical expertise and personal insight into the physical and mental demands of athletic performance. Her clinical interests include injury prevention, return to sport after injury, bone health, and running-related injuries, with a special focus on helping young athletes safely reach their full potential.
Dr. Watkins’ research explores several facets of sports medicine, including injury prevention strategies, gait retraining, and the influence of social media on athletes’ health and performance. Her work aims to bridge clinical practice and athlete behavior to promote long-term well-being.
Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Watkins earned her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada. She completed her pediatric residency at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital through Harvard Medical School.
During her fellowship, she served as a team physician for Northeastern University and as a consulting physician for the Boston Ballet School.
She also provided medical coverage for numerous events, including the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix and the Boston Athletic Association Half Marathon.
She currently serves as team physician for Berkeley High School and is the head of the UCSF East Bay Sports Concussion Program. She provides medical coverage for community sports events such as the San Francisco Marathon and the Berkeley Half Marathon. In addition, she serves as one of the team physicians for the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee and has provided medical coverage for the Trinidad and Tobago national team at multiple Pan American Games.
Before pursuing medicine, Dr. Watkins earned her Master of Public Health degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. She also achieved international acclaim as a track-and-field athlete, specializing in the long jump and high jump. A standout competitor for the UCLA track-and-field team, she became an NCAA champion and multiple-time All-American. Representing Trinidad and Tobago on the national stage, she competed in several international events, including the 2008 Summer Olympics, and continues to hold her country’s national record in the long jump.
