Dr. Faustine Ramirez
Primary Care Sports Medicine PhysicianMeet Dr. Faustine D. Ramirez, a board-certified primary care sports medicine physician and Co-Director of the UCSF Women’s Sports Medicine Center. She provides comprehensive care for patients with a wide range of musculoskeletal and sports-related conditions, with expertise in caring for female athletes across the lifespan — from adolescent and collegiate athletes to active adults and older women. Dr. Ramirez’s clinical interests include relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs), bone stress injuries and skeletal health, as well as hip conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement, labral tears, and hip dysplasia.
An expert in musculoskeletal ultrasound, Dr. Ramirez holds the RMSK certification and performs a wide range of ultrasound-guided procedures, including orthobiologic, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, and corticosteroid injections. She is passionate about using these techniques to enhance recovery for athletes and active individuals of all ages.
Dr. Ramirez’s current academic interests center on advancing the care of female athletes and exploring the aspects of musculoskeletal health that are unique to female patients. She is also involved in research aimed at enhancing understanding of non-steroidal injection options in sports medicine.
A dedicated educator, Dr. Ramirez is actively engaged in the teaching and mentorship of trainees at all levels.
She has given numerous educational presentations, including many focused on the care of female athletes, and has played a key role in improving sports medicine education for pediatricians. She has developed curricular resources for pediatric residents that have been widely disseminated within UCSF and through the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
Dr. Ramirez earned her medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco, where she graduated with distinction and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, an honor awarded to those who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and the highest ideals of the medical profession. She then completed her residency in pediatrics at UCSF and went on to pursue a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Stanford University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Ramirez has provided medical coverage for athletes at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels. She has served as assistant team physician for Lowell High School in San Francisco, as well as for Stanford University’s varsity football, women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s gymnastics teams.
A San Francisco native, Dr. Ramirez was a Division I student-athlete at the University of Washington, where she captained the women’s soccer team during her senior year. Outside of her clinical work, she enjoys spending time with her family, exploring the outdoors, and staying active through strength training and tennis.
