Meet Dr. Stephanie Wong, a highly skilled, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, and Co-Director of the UCSF Women’s Sports Medicine Center. Dr. Wong is dedicated to caring for athletes of all ages who suffer from hip, knee, or shoulder injuries. With a deep understanding of hip conditions, Dr. Wong’s expertise includes the management of labral tears, which involve damage to the ring of cartilage that lines the hip joint socket, and femoroacetabular impingement, a condition characterized by extra bone formation in the hip joint that causes pain during hip movements. Her proficiency extends to treating injuries of the hamstring and gluteal tendons, which are critical for hip stability and function. Dr. Wong is also renowned for her advanced arthroscopic techniques in hip preservation, a minimally invasive approach that utilizes small instruments, including a camera, to repair and preserve the hip joint through tiny incisions.

In addition to her expertise in hip preservation, Dr. Wong is adept at managing knee injuries, particularly those involving the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a key ligament for knee stability, and meniscus tears, which affect one of the two cartilage discs that cushion and stabilize the knee joint.

Her surgical skill set also encompasses shoulder conditions such as rotator cuff tears, which can severely impact shoulder movement, biceps injuries, and shoulder instability, a condition where the shoulder joint is prone to dislocation or excessive movement.

Dr. Wong’s commitment to advancing the field of orthopaedic surgery is reflected in her extensive research endeavors. She has published numerous articles focusing on a range of topics, including ACL injuries, rotator cuff tears, and the outcomes of shoulder replacement surgery. A strong advocate for evidence-based practice, Dr. Wong is particularly interested in utilizing patient-reported outcomes to inform surgical decision-making, ensuring that treatments are tailored to achieve the best possible results for each patient.

Dr. Wong’s academic achievements are distinguished by her educational background. She earned her medical degree from the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, where she was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, an honor awarded to those who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and the highest ideals of the medical profession. She then completed her residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, where she received an award recognizing her exceptional commitment to creating positive patient experiences and delivering outstanding care. To further refine her expertise, she completed a fellowship in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush University Medical Center, a program renowned for its focus on sports injuries and innovative surgical techniques.

Dr. Wong is passionate about inspiring the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons, particularly young women, encouraging them to pursue careers in this traditionally male-dominated field. Her dedication to sports medicine extends beyond her practice, as she has served as a team doctor for high school football teams in both the Bay Area and Chicago. She has also held the role of assistant team doctor for professional sports teams, including the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, and Chicago Steel, gaining valuable experience in managing high-level athletic injuries.

Fluent in conversational Cantonese, Dr. Wong brings a personal touch to her practice, connecting with a diverse patient population. Having grown up in San Ramon and Danville, California, she maintains strong ties to her community. Outside of her professional commitments, Dr. Wong enjoys skiing and exploring national parks, embracing an active lifestyle that aligns with her professional focus on sports and orthopaedic health.
